The room you never visit is working the hardest
Your attic sits between a sun-baked roof and the rooms you actually live in. In a lot of Southern California homes, it's also where the ductwork and sometimes the air handler live. So whatever is going on up there, whether it's thin insulation, a roof-rat nest, or gaps around every light fixture, shows up downstairs as hot bedrooms, dusty shelves and a system that runs longer than it should.
Plenty of San Diego County homes still have the insulation they were built with. In a 1960s ranch in Clairemont or a 1980s tract home in Mission Viejo, that often means a few inches of gray, flattened material that stopped doing much a long time ago.
What we do up there
- Attic cleaning and rodent-waste cleanup. Removing droppings, nesting debris and contaminated material, then sanitizing the surfaces so the odor doesn't linger.
- Insulation removal. Vacuuming out old, wet, compressed or contaminated insulation with HEPA-filtered equipment and bagging it outside, not through your hallway.
- Insulation replacement. Installing new blown-in or batt insulation at the right depth for your attic.
- Air sealing. Closing the gaps around plumbing stacks, wiring holes, recessed lights and the attic hatch where conditioned air slips out.
We also handle attic inspections on their own, if you just want to know where things stand before deciding anything.
How to tell which one you need
Think of it as a sequence rather than a menu. If there's evidence of rodents, a past roof leak, or insulation that's matted and dirty, it has to come out first. Putting new insulation on top of contaminated material just buries the problem. Once the attic is clean, new insulation and air sealing go in together, since sealing is easiest when the attic floor is bare.
If your existing insulation is dry, clean and just too thin, you may not need removal at all. Adding more on top can be the sensible, cheaper option. We'll tell you when that's the case.
Not sure? That's what the inspection is for. A tech goes up, checks depth and condition, looks for droppings and moisture, and takes photos so you can see exactly what we saw.
Why homeowners call Sky Clean Air for attic work
We're a family-owned HVAC and indoor air quality company that started in San Diego in 2018, and attic work fits naturally with what we already do. When we're in your attic, we're also looking at the ducts and equipment sitting in it. If a duct is crushed, disconnected or leaking, we'll point it out. If your system is getting up there in age, we'll mention that too, without a sales pitch attached.
We're licensed and insured (CA license #1036543), we serve homes from San Ysidro to Fallbrook, and we've recently started working across Orange County as well. Free estimates, a written price before any work starts, and financing options if you'd rather spread out the cost.

Attic & Insulation: Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to replace all my insulation, or can you just add more?
It depends on what's already there. Clean, dry insulation that's simply too shallow can usually be topped up. Insulation with rodent waste, water damage or heavy dust should come out first. We'll show you photos and explain which applies to your attic.
How do I know if I have rodents in the attic?
Scratching sounds at night, droppings near the attic hatch or garage, chewed wiring, and a sharp, stale odor on warm days are the usual clues. Roof rats are common in neighborhoods with mature trees and palms. An inspection will confirm it either way.
Will attic work make a mess inside my house?
We protect the path to the attic access and run the removal hose out to a collection bag outside, so the debris doesn't travel through your living space. Expect some activity around the hatch, but not dust through the whole house.
Does better attic insulation really help my AC?
Usually, yes. Less heat coming through the ceiling means your system doesn't have to fight as hard, especially in hotter inland areas like El Cajon, Escondido or Lake Forest. It won't fix an AC that has mechanical problems, but it takes a real load off one that's working properly.
Do you work in Orange County?
Yes. We've expanded from San Diego County into Orange County, from San Clemente up to Brea. See our service areas for details.
Can I stay home while you remove the insulation?
In most cases, yes. The work area is contained at the attic access, and the removed material goes out through a hose to a bag outside. If anyone in the house has severe asthma or a compromised immune system, you might prefer to be out for the day, and we're happy to talk that through.
How long does attic insulation removal take?
Most single-family homes take one day. Very large attics, tight crawl spaces or heavy rodent contamination can add time. We'll give you an estimate of the schedule along with the price.
Is blown-in or batt insulation better for my attic?
For most older San Diego and Orange County attics, especially low or cluttered ones, blown-in gives more complete coverage. Batts can be a good fit for open attics with standard framing. We'll recommend one after seeing your attic, and explain why.
Do I have to remove my old insulation first?
Not always. If it's clean and dry, new insulation can often go on top. If it has rodent waste, water damage or mold, or it's heavily compressed, it should come out first.
